Description
The Pardon Arrived ~ He Replied With Fire
Woodes Rogers sailed into Nassau on 22 July 1718 with a royal pardon for any pirate who wanted one. That night Charles Vane set a captured French ship ablaze, aimed it at the governor's fleet, and slipped out through the gap while everyone scrambled. He had been offered forgiveness and chose fireworks.
- For the one who does not take the deal: A gift for the friend who quit instead of apologizing, the sister who reads the terms and says no, and anyone who has ever burned a bridge on purpose.
- Exit interview, declined: The amnesty was free, the fire ship was not, and Vane spent the money anyway.
- Set ablaze in: Part of Pirate History & Legends, where no is a complete sentence and sometimes a weapon.
